Cultivation

Xanthosoma violaceum is a herbaceous plant with elegant dark green leaves. The long petioles and the veins of the lower leaf surface are viloett, is also the reason from where the species name "violaceum" came from. The leaves are heart shaped. Xanthosoma violaceum  blooms very rarely if ever produced.

The plant grows about 1 - 1.50 m high. It prefers partial shade or sun when it is not exposed to direct midday sun. The soil should be well drained and kept moist. The tuber don´t tolerates waterlogging. Withered leaves should be removed. The root tuber do not set too deep into the soil.

Due to the high starch content of tubers grown Xanthosoma violaceum in addition to use as an ornamental plant in the tropics as a fodder crop and food.
 
Propagation: Division of the plant stock.

Xanthosoma violaceum ist eine krautige Pflanze mit eleganten dunkelgrünen Blättern. Die langen Blattstiele und die Venen der Blattunterseite sind viloett, woher auch der Artname "violaceum" abgeleitet ist. Die Blätter sind herzförmig. Blüten bringt Xanthosoma violaceum, wenn überhaupt  sehr selten hervor. 

Die Pflanze wächst ungefähr 1 - 1,50 m hoch. Sie bevorzugt Halbschatten oder Sonne, wenn sie nicht direkter Mittagssonne ausgesetzt ist. Der Boden sollte gut durchlässig sein und stets feucht gehalten werden. Staunässe verträgt die Pflanzenknolle jedoch nicht. Abgewelkte Blätter sollten entfernt werden. Die Wurzelknolle nicht zu tief in die Erde setzen.

Auf Grund des hohen Stärkegehaltes der Wurzelknollen wird Xanthosoma violaceum  neben der Verwendung als Zierpflanze in den Tropen auch als Futterpflanze und Nahrungsmittel angebaut.
